The elements of interior design

During class this week, we talked about the different elements that are within interior design. Those elements that we talked about line, point, plane, space/volume and form. A Point/focal point is what is the foundation of any design. It may not always mean it’s the center of a room, but it is what is first seen/ noticed based on how a space is arranged. This could be things such as a feature wall, kitchen back splashes, paintings, mirrors, fireplaces or even light fixtures. 

 

After talking about points/focal points, we talked about lines. Those lines included horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and even curved lines. Horizontal lines are to represent calm places and make the smaller spaces feel larger. Vertical lines when used are to help make smaller space larger and are more elegant than horizontal lines. Diagonal lines are used to help create movement. The eyes follow the lines and help keep movement within a space. Curved lines are done for aesthetic, comfort, versatile, and movement. There are also zig zag lines which also help with engird and movement. 

After lines we talked about planes. There are three important planes within interior design and those include walls, ceilings, and floors. 

After talking about space/ volume, this has to do when there are multiple planes that are being joined together. There is positive space and negative space as well. A positive space has to do with a decorative item taking up space like a plant, or art work. Negative space is where a space is left empty on purpose to help give our eyes a break. 

The final thing we talked about is the form.Form has to do with the shape of a room all coming together. This could be having objects that are the same form to help give a certain feeling, however too many of it can be overwhelming. 

For the assignment of the upside own drawing, coming from someone who is not great a drawing, I found it to be difficult because I cant draw well when it is right side up. However I did feel it allowed for a better opportunity for creativity to flow because it wasn't going to be perfect.
